Community Band

St John's Community Band

We believe that music should be available to everyone, regardless of age, religion, race or financial situation. For this reason we decided to start a community band. The community band is for people of all abilities that do not want to compete in competitions but still enjoy getting together to make music.

The new Community Band runs alongside and in partnership with the senior band but offers a more supportive, learning and developmental opportunity for those who want to enjoy a brass band experience.

This can be someone who has recently taken up playing a brass instrument but haven't yet joined a band, or been playing for a while and are looking for a band to join, have played in the past and are thinking of playing again.

Joining a brass band as a first time or returning plaver can be a somewhat daunting experience but with our friendly relaxed atmosphere we aim to make all new members feel welcome.

Players of all abilities, of any age are encouraged to come along every Thursday from 7.15pm to 8pm and participate in a fantastic musical environment.

We will be looking in depth to improve both theoretical and practical musically ability whilst offering progression alongside our main band. Members of our main band will also be in attendance to support and encourage new players.

We provide all equipment including instruments and music so joining us is available to everyone, including those facing financial hardships.

Musical Director - Jamie Gordon

Jamie started playing the Cornet at age 8 with Oldham Music Service under the tuition of Helen Williams (then Fox), he then moved on to Failsworth Band and stayed there until he was aged 16. During his time with Failsworth Band he had tuition with Stephen Corbett and Manchester Music Service and later joined Blakely Band.

Under the direction of Aidrian Smith at Blakely Band he transitioned over to Tenor horn and later moved on to Longridge Band.

In 2017, after a break from playing due to studying commitments Jamie joined St John's Band Mossley on Solo Horn, it was at St John's Band Mossley he developed an interest in Musical Directorship and when the opportuniy arose to direct the Community Band he jumped at the chance.

As well as being the Musical Director for the Community Band, Jamie is also the Principal Euphonium player for St Johns Band Mossley's Senior Band.
